Charles W. Hill


Charles W. Hill, 95, Cherokee, IA, formerly of rural Aurelia, IA, and El Dorado Springs, passed away Thursday morning, Dec. 2, 2010, in the Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center. Charles was born on Nov. 14, 1915, to Henry and Sophie (Specht) Hill.

He was united in marriage on Dec. 11, 1935, to Mary Frances Barlow in Storm Lake, IA. 

He farmed in O’Brien County for a short time and then farmed south of Aurelia, IA, for many years until he moved to Littleton, CO, in 1967 to work for South Suburban Parks and Recreation. He retired in 1981, relocated to El Dorado Springs, MO, and returned to Iowa in 2005.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, El Dorado Springs Municipal Golf Course and the Lions Club in El Dorado Springs. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, square dancing, trap shooting and was active in church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 2001; an infant daughter, Marilyn; a brother, Jim Hill, and three sisters - Eleanor Swenson, Arlene Jurgensen and Marjorie Rahbaugh.

He is survived by his five children - Carol Otto, and her husband, Leon - Centennial, CO; Jim Hill, and his special friend, Joyce Leckband - Paullina, IA; David Hill - Kenyon, MN; Dianne Lyons, and her husband, Roy - Middleburg, FL; and Duane Hill - Cherokee, IA; 14 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, IA, with Pastor Daniel Wagner officiating. Burial followed in the Afton Township Cemetery in Cherokee, IA, under the direction Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, IA.
