Mabel I. Whiteside Gill, 96, Joplin, passed away at 1 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, in St. John's Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
Born June 11, 1907, in Harwood, the daughter of the late Fred F. Whiteside and Harriett Locke Whiteside. She had lived in Joplin since 1941. She worked in the kitchen at the former Connor Hotel. She also worked for the former General Hospital (later Oak Hill Hospital) retiring as a dietician in 1972.
On July 4, 1925, she married Dewey J. Fox in El Dorado Springs. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1941.
She married Orris W. Gill on May 19, 1954, in Joplin. He preceded her in death on March 10, 1960. Two sisters, Lottie Groves and Jessie Way, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daughters - Mary Steckstor, Nellie Watson and Nadine Ellen Bennett - all of Joplin; two sons, Franklin D. Fox - El Dorado Springs, and Forrest W. Fox - Melrose, KS; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Betty Lou Maudlin - El Dorado Springs; and her dog, Babe.
Graveside services began at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin, with Dr. Roger Nichols officiating. Grandsons served as pallbearers. The family received friends and family from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
