John E. Hawn, 92, Mimbres, NM, passed from this life on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Fort Bayard Medical Center in Silver City, NM. He was born March 19, 1918, in Kansas City to John W. and Rebecca Ann (Dietterich) Hawn.
He was united in marriage to Vivian Schmidt on Jan. 1, 1940, and to this union one son was born.
John served his country during World War II earning the Silver Star Medal. He enjoyed reading about history and the southwest, fishing, hunting and traveling, having visited almost all 50 states. He loved woodworking and carpentry and he built his own home.
He is survived by his wife, Josie (Perkins) Hawn – Mimbres, NM; son, Clifford Hawn, and wife, Sharon – El Dorado Springs; step-son, Jim Mattocks – Las Cruces, NM; step-daughter, Ruth Halvorsen, and husband, Mark – Las Cruces, NM; grandchildren – Conway Hawn, Cheryl Coleman, Mason Halvorsen and Randy Halvorsen; four great-grandchildren – Clifford Hawn and Christian Hawn – Licking, and Gavin Coleman and Gaige Coleman – Bolivar.
Graveside services and interment was Wednesday, July 28, in Fort Bayard National Cemetery with Deacon Bill Holguin officiating and Veteran Honors accorded by the local Veterans groups.
