Viola Mae (Hertzberg) Hazelwood


Viola Mae (Hertzberg) Hazelwood, 98, El Dorado Springs, passed on to be with the Lord on Sept. 19, 2009. She was born to Henry and Laura (Hornbeck) Hertzberg on Feb. 15, 1911, in Prairie Home, Cooper County, MO.

In her pre-teen years, she moved with her family to a farm south of El Dorado Springs. Growing up with five brothers and two sisters, she became an accomplished pianist.

Viola married Virgel Hazelwood on Feb. 5, 1933, and they had three children. While being a homemaker and beloved mother, she continued her love for the piano, playing for her church (Seventh Day Church of God). After rearing her children, she worked at the Dunhill Shirt Factory for some 20 years. Later in her years, she enjoyed the ministry of Pastor Dana Taylor at the Assembly of God Church in El Dorado Springs.

Preceding Viola in death were her husband, Virgel Hazelwood, in 1976; her parents; and her five brothers - Floyd, Lawrence, Herman, Robert and Cecil Hertzberg.

Viola leaves behind her beloved twin sisters, Ruth Bausch and Rachel Benham - El Dorado Springs; one daughter, Laura Clinton and husband, Bob - Walker; two sons, Wayne Hazelwood - El Dorado Springs, and Wyatt Hazelwood and wife, Mary Ann - Grandview; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.

Services began at 11 a.m. in the Bland-Hackleman Chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, with Pastor Dana Taylor officiating. Music was provided by Donna Chism and Joanne Alexander. Interment followed in the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Jon Hazelwood, Stephanie White, Jennifer Brooks, Tracy Clinton, Jodee Fanning, Lindsey Miles, Mitchell Miles, Jenelle Woods, Jessica Barnett, Chance Coulter, Courtney Coulter, Sawyer Coulter and Jessie Hazelwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Community Springs Nursing Home.
