Lula G. Johnston

Lula G. Johnston, 90, Sullivan, passed away Aug. 3, 2011. She was born Nov. 17, 1920, in Sherman, TX, to Earl Frank Griswold Sr. and Ethel Emma Martin.

After high school, Lula worked as a stenographer, first for International Shoe Company and later for the Corps of Engineers.
She married George H. Johnston on Aug. 16, 1947. Lula was a charter member of the Sullivan Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed volunteering as a “Pink Lady” for over 40 years. She was a member of Eastern Star Chapter #105 and was very active in the First United Presbyterian Church of Sullivan. Lula also enjoyed going out to dinner with her women friends until failing health forced her to move out of town to be closer to her daughter.

Lula was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; two brothers, Martin and Earl Griswold and a sister, Frances Pickerell.

She is survived by three children - Georgeann Wisner and husband, Warren - El Dorado Springs, Doug Johnston and wife, Linda – Sullivan and Philip Ownes and wife, Betty - Louisville, KY; seven grandchildren - Chad Johnston and wife, Heather - Sullivan, Marcus Johnston and wife, Tiffany of Sullivan, Matthew Owens of Louisville, KY, Jason Butterfield and wife, Jennifer – Clever, and Brandon, Erick and Rachel Butterfield - all of El Dorado Springs; seven great-grandchildren - Torri, Chance, Alexis, Lexe, Cole, Gabriel and Ryan; and other relatives and friends.

Services were conducted on Monday, Aug. 8, at Eaton Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Delashmit officiating. Interment followed in Oddfellows Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials to the Sullivan Hospital Auxiliary or First United Presbyterian Church of Sullivan.

Arrangements were under the direction of Eaton Funeral Home and Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
