Lela Audrey West, 94, El Dorado Springs, passed away April 23, 2009, in Community Springs Healthcare Facility in El Dorado Springs. Audrey was born Jan. 27, 1915, the fifth of 10 children in Guymon, OK, to Judson and Minnie (Ferguson) Hamby.
Audrey grew up in the Panhandle of Oklahoma. The family moved to Missouri in 1935 after the dust bowl and settled close to Montevallo where she met Guy West at the Montevallo Baptist Church. On Nov. 24, 1938, Audrey and Guy were married. To this union two daughters were born, Frances and Geraldine.
Audrey was a member of the First Baptist Church and taught a Sunday School class most of her adult life. She was very active in the Women’s Missions group. Audrey lived on the farm all of her married life. She enjoyed gardening and also hand painted many quilts, towels and pillowcases.
For over 25 years Audrey was employed at Cedar County Memorial Hospital in various departments, including the lab, kitchen and laundry.
Preceding Audrey in death were her parents; her husband, Guy; three infant children; one sister, Vera Green; and five brothers - Guy Hamby, Clifton Hamby, J.S. Hamby, Charles Hamby and Verdie Hamby.
Survivors include her two daughters, Frances West – Kansas City, and Geraldine West – El Dorado Springs; two sisters, Georgia Baker – Cheyenne, OK, and Myrtle Boultinghouse – El Dorado Springs; one brother, G. W. Hamby - Higginsville; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Tuesday, April 28, in the El Dorado Springs First Baptist Church with Rev. John Hold Officiating. Rusty Carver and Rita Farris provided the music. Interment followed in Virgil city Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were – Don Boultinghouse, Roy Boulting-house, Allen Boultinghouse, Everett Kenney, Al Stebbins and Tim Schieffer.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Audrey West to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
