Vera Jewell Barbour, 98, Nevada, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at Christian Health Care in Nevada. She was born July 30, 1912, in Roscoe to Edward Levi Luther and Zella Virgie Simmons Luther.
She married Homer Chester Barbour on Oct. 15, 1934, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1999.
Vera grew up in St. Clair County and attended the Stony Point Country School. She and her husband owned the grocery store in Richards for several years before returning to farming in the rural Nevada area. Vera was a member of the Richards Christian Church and a life-long member of the Eastern Star in Schell City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.
She is survived by one daughter, Janie Loyd, and her husband, David - Nevada; two granddaughters, Sherry Hudson and her husband, Doug – Neosho, and Kristie Townsend and her husband, Brad – Clinton; four great-grandchildren – Shaun McConnaughey, Ryan McConnaughey and Cody McConnaughey – all of Neosho, and Taylor Townsend – Clinton; and one great-grandson, Noah McConnaughey.
Services were held Monday, Feb. 28, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Brother Melvin Mabra officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Taberville under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
