Edna Mildred (Jones) Gant, 102, El Dorado Springs, passed away March 30, 2011. She was born Jan. 9, 1909, to Alvaro and Lizzie Jones in Kingfisher, OK.
Edna attended and graduated high school in 1928 at Big Four High School in Kingfisher. In 1932, she married Cleo Gant. To this union three sons were born - Gene, Norman and Wayne Allen. After Cleo’s death she married Jesse Stutesman and, after his passing, she married Charles Headlee.
She affiliated with the Methodist Church and was baptized at an early age. Edna was a homemaker all her life and enjoyed dancing, gardening and flowers.
Preceding her in death were her parents; three husbands - Cleo Gant, Jesse Stutesman and Charles Headlee; two sons, Gene and Wayne Allen; a sister, Neva; a brother, Elmo; and a daughter-in-law, Sandy.
Survivors include one son, Norman and wife, Annie - El Dorado Springs; seven grandchildren - Dennis Gant, Darrell Gant and wife, Katy, Debra Smith and husband, Bob, Dale Gant and wife, Susan, Sheila Rieken and husband, Larry, Jerry Gant and wife, Annie, and Gale McBeth; a host of great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, April 2, at Bland-Hackleman Chapel with Robert Newberry officiating. Rusty Carver provided music. Interment was Monday, April 4, at Kingfisher Cemetery in Kingfisher, OK. Arrangements were under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home in El Dorado Springs.

Mark Eugene Hill
Mark Eugene Hill, 43, El Dorado Springs, passed from this life March 29, 2011. He was born Feb. 23, 1968, in El Dorado Springs to Marvin and Marjorie (Schiereck) Hill.
Mark attended and graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1986. He worked for many years as a construction worker. He was a member of The Fraternal Order of the Eagles, was a volunteer fireman and, in his younger days, was a member of the Boy Scouts of America.
His hobbies and interests included NASCAR, golf, bowling, baseball, football, trap shooting, four-wheeling and riding ATVs. Four words that would describe Mark are - funny, dependable, honest and passionate. Relationships that had a big influence on his life were his Grandfather Schiereck, Walt Anderson, Leo Green, Howard Simmons and Kenny Hamilton.
Mark is survived by his parents, Marvin and Marjorie Hill - Willard; a sister, Marsha (Hill) Fewell and her husband, Franklin - Colorado Springs, CO; and many other relatives and friends.
Services were held on Saturday, April 2, at Bland-Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Jack Daniel officiating. Paula Newman provided music. Interment followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Nona Yvonne (Floyd) Eaves
Nona Yvonne (Floyd) Eaves, 74, St. Joseph, formerly of El Dorado Springs, was born July 15, 1936, to David E. and Lizzie (Shaw) Floyd. She passed away on March 28, 2011, at Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph.
Nona was united in marriage to Curtis B. Eaves on May 9, 1953. To this union three children were born - Joe Benjamin, Betty Ann and Brenda Kay.
Nona worked at Walmart/Sam’s Club for 19 years as a People Greeter. Her greatest pleasures were her two great-granddaughters. She also loved watching wrestling, fishing and playing bingo.
Nona was preceded in death by her husband and her parents, as well as four brothers - Cecil, Sherman, Carl and Billie; and three sisters - Wilma Gray, Fern Mooney and Helen Sumner.
Nona is survived by her three children - Joe and wife, Ellen – Belton, Betty Ann Hutchens and Brenda Kay Eaves; one grandson, Daniel Hutchens; two great-granddaughters, Alexis and Reagan - all of St. Joseph; one sister, Edna Cowan - North Kansas City; two brothers, Tommie - Springfield, and Jim - El Dorado Springs.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, April 1, in Bland-Hackleman Chapel in El Dorado Springs with Rev. David Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at the funeral home.

Mary Ellen Poteet
Mary Ellen Poteet, 83, Lamar, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011, at Barton County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born March 6, 1920, in Anthon, IA, to Edwin Walter Prescott and Opal Viola Palmer Prescott.
She married James Warner on Oct. 6, 1944, in Anthon, IA, and he preceded her in death in Dec. 1984. She married Leroy Poteet in November 1992 in Arkansas and he survives of the home.
Mary spent most of her youth in Iowa. She came to Missouri several years after marriage and spent the rest of her life here. She was a homemaker and a seamstress by trade and a member of the Milford Christian Church. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was deeply loved in return.
In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers - Ancil Edwin Prescott, Edwin Eugene Prescott, James Robert Prescott and Charles Daniel Prescott; one sister, Ruth Marion Dicus; and one stepson, Roy Poteet.
In addition to her husband, Leroy Poteet, she is survived by one son, James Eugene Warner – Weir, KS; three daughters – Marion Elaine Bernard – Collinsville, OK, Opal Marie Mooney – Sheldon, and Lavone Irene Beatty – Blue Springs; one stepdaughter, Ellen Annette Choszczyk – Paonia, CO; and one sister, Patsy Maddox – Cherokee, IA; 11 granchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Sarah (Sam) Ann Frazier
Sarah (Sam) Ann Frazier, 66, El Dorado Springs, passed away March 26, 2011, at her home in El Dorado Springs. She was born in Oklahoma City, OK, on April 16, 1944, the daughter of William Jennings Bales and Sara Annabell (Britton) Bales.
She moved to El Dorado Springs Oct. 31, 1990, and Sam and Steve were married March 1, 1992.
She was the Director of Crosslines for six years. She was an avid bowler and helped with Gun Fire Deer Check-in at Tote and Float
for many years, along with furnishing lots of good for everyone else who helped.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; and grandparents, Robert and Gladys Bales.
Sarah is survived by her husband, Steve – of the home; four sons - Stan, Jerry Easley, Charlie and Erin Mack – all of Oklahoma; brother, William LaRoy (Margaret) Bales – Oklahoma; sister, Martha Mae Bales – Butler; three nephews and one niece.
No services are planned. Donations may be made to charity of choice or to Sheldon Funeral Home for last expenses.

Wilma worked for many years as a microprocessor at IBM in Kansas City and later at the Rich Hill Bank. She was a businesswoman in Taberville for many years.
She loved the outdoors, especially crappie fishing and caring for her flowers and garden.
Preceding Wilma in death were her parents, Deb and Irene Waters of Taberville; and her husband, Donald Belew, of Wheatland.
Survivors include her son, Bill Roberts - Taberville; granddaughter, Christina Roberts - Oak Harbor, WA; and a great-granddaughter, Hayley Roberts - Oak Harbor, WA.

Ruby Gayle Wilson
Ruby Gayle Wilson, 101, El Dorado Springs, passed away Monday, March 21, 2011. She was born March 31, 1909, to Walter and Maude (Jennings) Estes in El Dorado Springs.
When Ruby Gayle was 13, she met her future husband, Eddie Wilson. She left El Dorado Springs as a teenager to live with her brother in Portland, OR. She graduated from high school there. She started college but got a job with Pacific Bell and eventually transferred to Kansas City with AT&T. She and Eddie were married at a Methodist Church in Kansas City in 1932. They were married for over 60 years.
As a teenager, Ruby Gayle enjoyed swimming and won several medals in Oklahoma. She belonged to the United Methodist Church, was a charter member of the Business and Professional Women of El Dorado Springs and was a member of El Dorado Springs Bridge Club, Royal Neighbors, Modern Woodsmen and the Great Oaks Country Club.
In addition to traveling the world, she enjoyed the music shows in Branson and sewing. She and Eddie were avid Kansas City Chiefs fans.
Ruby Gayle attributed her longevity to working hard every day on her job with AT&T and to having her cocktail before dinner every night.
Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Charles and Glenn; and an infant sister, Bonnie.
Ruby is survived by two nieces: Alice Estes - Portland, OR, and Ruth Gayle Taylor - Weiser, ID, and many other relatives and friends.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 24, at the El Dorado Springs United Methodist Church with Pastor Patty Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be - Dr. Jacque Reynolds, Ron Sewell, Bill Taylor, Dell Taylor, Jim Burroughs and Randy Jordan. Joe Hendricks will be an honorary pallbearer.

Bonnie A. Prewitt, 91, Walker, passed away Monday, March 14, 2011, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. She was born on Oct. 7, 1919, in Walker, MO, to William G. Jones and Susie Coffman Jones.
She married Robert S. Prewitt on June 21, 1941, in Butler and he preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 2003.
Bonnie was born and raised in Walker and graduated from Walker High School. She was a seamstress and enjoyed playing bingo. She was a member of the Walker Christian Church.

Charles Vittetoe
Charles Vittetoe, 70, Independence, went to be with his Lord March 13, 2011. He was born Aug. 13, 1940, to Theo and Irene Vittetoe in Cedar County. He lived most of his life in Jackson County.
Charles married Glenda and together they shared 40 years of blessed marriage.
He was a deacon at Noland Road Baptist Church, a Mason and 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and a member of Rod-Tiques Car Club.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Kristi Jean Land.
Survivors include his wife, Glenda; daughters - Robin Weber (David), Lori Brogdon (Michael) and Dawn Justmar (Jay); grandchildren – Patrick, Taylor, Jessica, Nickolas and Matthew; brothers, Curtis (Arlene) and Lavern; sister, Faye Keith (Frank); numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services were held March 17 at Noland Road Baptist Church. Burial was in Floral Hills Cemetery, Raytown.

Marilee Macha (Hargrove) Melton, 79, Springfield, passed away at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. She was born to Paul and Etta (Shaw) Hargrove on June 29, 1931, in Vernon County. Marilee’s parents owned and operated
Hargrove Hardware in El Dorado Springs for several years.
Marilee lived most of her adult life in Brookline where she enjoyed going out to eat, especially at Ziggie’s Cafe. She enjoyed eating catfish that had been caught by her best friend, James Lockstead, and prepared by his wife, Mary Lou. Marilee was described as being “strong-willed and stubborn.” She especially loved the companionship of her Chihuahua, Buddy.
Preceding Marilee in death were her parents, one brother and two sisters.
She is survived by her adopted family, the Locksteads, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside services were held on Monday morning, March 14, 2011, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery near El Dorado Springs with Reverend James Coleman officiating. Services were under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Harold Frederick Goddard was born Jan. 3, 1938, in Pittsburg, KS, to James E. and Mildred L. (Hume) Goddard. He passed away March 9, 2011, at Community Springs Healthcare Facility in El Dorado Springs.
Mr. Goddard was a retired military veteran having served his country in the U.S. Army 22 years and in the Marine Corp eight years for a total of 30 years.
A Memorial Service with Pastor David Studer officiating and Military Services provided by the Kansas National Guard were held Friday, March 11, at the Ft. Scott National Cemetery, Ft. Scott, KS, under the direction of Sheldon Funeral Home of El Dorado Springs.

Mary Ione (Catherwood) Balk
Mary Ione (Catherwood) Balk, 92, of rural Walker, passed away March 3, 2011, at Barone Alzheimer Care Center. She was born July 22, 1918, near Metz, the daughter of John Wray and Bernice Marie (Swarens) Catherwood.
Graduating from Metz High School in 1936, Mary immediately began her teaching career at Belvoir, a country school with six students near Schell City. She taught for five years, attending Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg each summer until she married Vernon Wesley Hiram Balk on April 20, 1941.
Early in their marriage, Mary and Vernon lived in Kansas City, where their sons, Gary Wray and Larry Vernon, were born. The family returned to Vernon County to live with Vernon’s mother on the farm near the Ketterman community. Their daughter, Sharon Ilene, was born in Nevada.
Mary returned to college, receiving her bachelor’s degree in education from Pittsburg’State Teachers College. She taught at Starr and Green Valley country schools and Jefferson Elementary in Nevada. Even after retiring from the teaching profession, Mary continued to substitute at area schools.
Mary was a member of Berea Christian Church and, after moving to Nevada, she and Vernon placed their membership at First Christian Church.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting (making over 300 baby sweaters) and quilting for which she won many awards. In their retirement years, Mary and Vernon loved to goose hunt and fish. She loved spending time with and sewing for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She taught Sunday school classes and Vacation Bible School for many years and was a 4-H project leader. She was a lifetime member of the Retired Missouri State Teachers Association.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 53 years, Vernon Balk; her parents, Wray and Bernice Catherwood; brother, Willis Catherwood; infant brother; and stepfather, Earl Agnew.
Survivors include sons, Gary Balk and wife, Ellen - Nevada, and Larry Balk and wife, Debbie - rural Rich Hill; daughter, Sharon Webb and husband, Dick - rural Walker; seven grandchildren - Gary “Chip” Balk, Kelly Curbow, Tyria Thoreson, Tanya Webb, Troy Webb, Shane Balk and Bethany Balk; and five great-grandchildren - Matthew Waltrip, Justin Radspinner, Mary and Judi Thoreson and Hunter Balk.
Services were held Monday, March 7, in the First Christian Church, Nevada. Interment followed in Berea Cemetery under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Early in their marriage, Mary and Vernon lived in Kansas City, where their sons, Gary Wray and Larry Vernon, were born. The family returned to Vernon County to live with Vernon’s mother on the farm near the Ketterman community. Their daughter, Sharon Ilene, was born in Nevada.
Mary returned to college, receiving her bachelor’s degree in education from Pittsburg’State Teachers College. She taught at Starr and Green Valley country schools and Jefferson Elementary in Nevada. Even after retiring from the teaching profession, Mary continued to substitute at area schools.
Mary was a member of Berea Christian Church and, after moving to Nevada, she and Vernon placed their membership at First Christian Church.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting (making over 300 baby sweaters) and quilting for which she won many awards. In their retirement years, Mary and Vernon loved to goose hunt and fish. She loved spending time with and sewing for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She taught Sunday school classes and Vacation Bible School for many years and was a 4-H project leader. She was a lifetime member of the Retired Missouri State Teachers Association.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 53 years, Vernon Balk; her parents, Wray and Bernice Catherwood; brother, Willis Catherwood; infant brother; and stepfather, Earl Agnew.
Survivors include sons, Gary Balk and wife, Ellen - Nevada, and Larry Balk and wife, Debbie - rural Rich Hill; daughter, Sharon Webb and husband, Dick - rural Walker; seven grandchildren - Gary “Chip” Balk, Kelly Curbow, Tyria Thoreson, Tanya Webb, Troy Webb, Shane Balk and Bethany Balk; and five great-grandchildren - Matthew Waltrip, Justin Radspinner, Mary and Judi Thoreson and Hunter Balk.
Services were held Monday, March 7, in the First Christian Church, Nevada. Interment followed in Berea Cemetery under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Judith Rae (Chandley) Russell
Judith Rae (Chandley) Russell, 79, of El Dorado Springs, passed away March 2, 2011. Judy was born in Edwardsville, KS, on Feb. 8, 1932, the youngest child of Prometheus (Pete) and Tokeh (Shannon) Chandley. She attended Elementary School in Edwardsville and High School at Bonner Springs, KS.
Judy had five children: four from her first marriage and one from her second to Carl Edward (Butch) Russell.
Judy began nursing school after she became a grandmother. She was a graduate of the second class for Registered Nurses at Metropolitan Junior College, Kansas City, in 1969. She began her nursing career as a hospital nurse at Cedar County Memorial Hospital. She also worked at Nevada State Hospital, Sac Osage Hospital, Bethany Memorial Hospital in Kansas City, KS, and Brownsville Medical Center in Brownsville, TX.
She loved nursing but especially loved caring for the elderly. Her love for nursing homes started in 1981 when she was the Director of Nursing at the Community Care Center in El Dorado Springs. She was once told by an “older” nurse that someone has to love our “old” people and Judy loved the “old people” and has always felt like they loved her too. Besides working in nursing homes in Stockton, Nevada, Humansville, Lamar, Bolivar, Butler, Lowry City and Appleton City, she has taught EMT, Certified Nurse Assistant and Certified Medical Technician classes.
Judy was a member of the United Methodist Church, as well as the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Preceding Judy in death were her parents; eight sisters; six brothers; her husband, Robert Dean Burress; one granddaughter, Lisa Marie; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Judy is survived by her five children: Rita Crocker - Holden, Roberta Green - North Pole, AK, Rebecca McKee - Kuttawa, KY, Robert Burress - Lander, WY, and Sharon Bray - St. Cloud, FL; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and four foster children - Sam Elliott, Chris West Cochran, Jessie and James Sprinkle.
A memorial service was held at Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home in El Dorado Springs on Saturday, March 5.
Arrangements were under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Clarence Jay Baker
Clarence “Clancy””Jay Baker, 76, was born April 6, 1934, to Ame and Grace Baker in Kalamazoo, MI. He passed away at home surrounded by family and Heartland Hospice nurses on March 2, 2011.
Clancy was raised in Kalamazoo, MI, were he attended 4th Dutch Reform Christian Church and Kalamazoo Central High School graduating in 1952. After graduation, he worked in the trucking industry, ultimately becoming an independent owner/operator.
In March 1977 while dining at a favorite restaurant, Clancy met the love of his life, Kathy, when she walked in on crutches with a broken leg and two crying toddlers in tow. Kathy later became employed at this restaurant where they became friends and fell in love. On May 11, 1978, they were united in marriage. This union of family became complete on Feb. 25, 1983, with Clarence’s adoption of Mike and Kyle.
Life in Missouri began in 1984 when the family relocated to El Dorado Springs. Clarence went to work at Cecomo Manufacturing, driving a semi-truck. After heart surgery in 1989, he returned to work driving again until a logging accident forced his retirement. He began part-time work as a driver delivering pallets for 3-M Corporation.
In 1997 he went to work as a Mental Health Worker for Heartland Hospital in Nevada. Those 12 years at Heartland were the happiest of times for him. He truly enjoyed his work with the kids, many of whom still call him’“Grandpa.” He developed friendships that where very important to him with his co-workers.
Everyone who knew him, knows the love he had for his dogs, they were always on his lap when he was home.
Clarence was known by many different names - Clancy, Pops, Dutch, Boss or the Old Fart. He was a joker, lovingly calling his wife, Kathy, the “Warden” for all their 33 years of marriage. He said this was because she cares for all the creatures that walked through the door, himself the Dutchman, kids, dogs and anyone who needed help.
Clarence was known for his laughter and friendly manner. No matter where he lived, the local coffee shop quickly knew his name.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ame and Grace; sister, Annie Borgais; daughter, Anita Baker-Wright, her husband, Gary Wright; nephews, Michael Baker and Chris Borgais; sister-in-law, Barbara Baker; and brother-in-law, Donald Turner.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Kathy - of the home; sons Michael William Baker and Kyle Robert Baker - Nevada, Clarence Ted Baker and Carl Jay Baker - both from the state of Michigan; brother, Robert Baker - Midland, MI; mother-in-law, Anita Loose – Stockton; brothers-in-law, Bill Page - Omaha, NE, and Mike Hubbard - Nevada; sister-in-law - Georgiana Turner, Bolivar; many nieces, nephews, granddaughters and loved friends.
