John Newton Harlow III

John Newton Harlow III, 87, Nevada, passed away on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada. He was born May 17, 1922, in Hominy, OK, to John Harlow II and Vida Wilson Harlow.

He was married to Jaye Stockton and she preceded him in death. He later married Adeline Harlow and she preceded him in death in 2008.

John moved with his family at a young age to Barton County and graduated from Lamar High School in 1940.

He joined the U.S. Army in September 1940 and served until March 1946. He served in France and fought in the Battle of Normandy. He received the Silver Star, a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Following his military service, he came to Nevada and married Jaye Stockton and took over his wife’s family business, Johannes Hardware, on the west side of the square which he operated for many years, retiring in the 1980’s.

He was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church, American Legion Post #402 and VFW# 2175, Nevada.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by two half-sisters, Josephine Elrod and Jacqueline Howell.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Harlow; one son, John N. Harlow IV, Columbia; five grandchildren - Cyndi Hochstedler - El Dorado Springs, Sonja Albright - Nevada, Tracy Hackleman - Nevada, John Harlow V - St. Louis, and Brian Harlow, Columbia; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Juanita Cox - Tulsa, OK; and several friends and caregivers who were like family that he was very close too - Maggie, Betty, Hector, Mary, Valerie, Mamie, Mattie, Randy, Tammy B., Barb and a longtime helper, Lafayette.

John donated his body to research. A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 24, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Military honors were held at the funeral home following the service.
