Lowell Melvin Highbargin, 71, El Dorado Springs, passed away on July 31, 2009. Lowell was born July 11, 1938, in McCune, KS, to Roy and Irene (McDowell) Highbargin.
Lowell was raised in Iola, KS, and following high school, entered the US Navy in 1954. He spent three years on the destroyers USS Isherwood and USS Boyd. After his service, Lowell met the love of his life, Charlotte (Sprigg), and they were married June 18, 1960. A son, Kris, was born in 1961 and a daughter, Katheryn, in 1964.
Lowell accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior in March 1967. In April 1968, Lowell and Charlotte moved to Alaska where they lived and worked for 25 years. Lowell did many jobs including: worked as a diesel mechanic, hauled drill rigs for the Trans Alaska pipeline and worked 17 years for Copper Valley Electric as mechanic and power production superintendent. In 1991, Lowell and Charlotte left Glennallen and moved to Wrangell Island, AK, where Lowell was general manager of the State of Alaska hydro-electric plant. He was blessed with leadership and management skills that inspired people to excel. Lowell had a large role in the growth of the Wrangell Bible Church. He was a leader there for several years.
They moved to Missouri in 1997 to help care for their aging mothers. From 1997 until his passing Lowell served the Lord in Union Hall Church where he was ordained a deacon. Lowell loved the fellow believers in the church family and was much loved in return. He was in poor health the past two years on kidney dialysis. Now we praise God knowing the Great Physician has healed him and he is in peace and safety with the Lord.
Lowell is survived by Charlotte, his wife of 49 years; his son, Kris Highbargin, and wife, Debbie; his daughter, Katheryn Unfried, and husband, Steven; one sister, Juanita Williams, and husband, Bobby; seven grandchildren – Rebecca Rausenberge, and husband, Tobias, Lowell Q. Highbargin, and wife, Megan, Samuel Highbargin, Daniel Unfreid, and wife, Laura, Nathaniel Unfreid, and wife, Elexie, Kristallyn Unfreid and Joel Unfreid; three great-grandchildren; and many friends and extended family members.
A special thank-you is given for all the support from friends and family who gave so selflessly during this time while Charlotte was overseas in Germany.
Services were held Aug. 7, in the Union Hall Baptist Church with Bro. Elbert Ford officiating. Music was provided by Ruth Brown and Debbie Roe. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.

Anna Jean (Day) Walsh Snider
Anna Jean (Day) Walsh Snider, 84, El Dorado Springs, passed away July 20, 2009. Jean was born April 6, 1925, to Ralph Day and Mabel (Meador) Day in Sommersville.
Jean was married to William Walsh and to this union one son, Michael, was born.
She graduated from SMS College, Springfield, with a teaching degree in elementary education and taught elementary school for many years in Missouri and Virginia. Jean also studied art at the University of Maryland and taught high school art in Virginia.
Later, Jean married Curtis Guffy, of Rockville, and taught school in Appleton City. After his death, she married Harold Snider on Nov. 2, 1992.
Jean was very active in church. She attended the El Dorado Springs First Baptist Church for many years and taught an adult Sunday School class. After she and Harold were married, she became a member of the El Dorado Springs Nazarene Church. She attended church faithfully as long as her health permitted. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.
Preceding her in death were her parents; two husbands, William Walsh and Curtis Guffy; and one brother, John Day.
Survivors include: her husband, Harold Snider, of the home; one son, Michael Walsh, and wife, Deborah - Dayton, VA; three grandchildren - Christina (Walsh) Hathaway, and husband, Sylvester (Sonny) - Houston, TX; Jessica Walsh and Andrew Walsh, both of Virginia; three great-grandchildren - Mason, Mitchell and Payton Hathaway; one step-son, John Snider - El Dorado Springs; one step-daughter, Nancy Friesen - Los Angeles, CA; three brothers - Ralph Day - Bella Vista, AR, Harold Day - Oklahoma City, OK, and Jack Day - Ballwin; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Monday, July 27, in the Bland-Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Wendell Daniel officiating. Lorraine Miller provided music. Interment followed in Rockville Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home. Pallbearers were - Robert Barlow, Leonard Miller, Richard Miller, Russell Dyer, Quentin Walsh and Dale Goodman. Honorary pallbearers were - Maurice Bland, Marvin Snider and Jose DeValle.

Joan T. Moeller
Joan T. Moeller, Denison, IA, 74, formerly of El Dorado Springs, was born Sept. 26, 1934, the daughter of Christian and Anna Walter Weinbrandt. She died Friday, July 24, 2009, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, IA.
Joan was born in Vail, IA. She was baptized in Christ on Dec. 12, 1934, by Rev. William Frese and confirmed on April 10, 1949, by Rev. Carl Schmidt, both at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She attended country schools and graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1952. After graduation she remained at home to help her father on the farm until 1958 when he retired and they moved to Denison. She then did babysitting until she was married.
On June 9, 1962, Joan was united in marriage to Richard Martin Moeller in Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. Carl Schmidt. The couple made their home in Denison. Shortly thereafter they started Moeller Soft Water. In May of 1968, they moved their business to Cherokee, IA, where they were living when their son, Brian, was born. They moved back to Denison in 1969 and she was the office manager for Moeller Soft Water. In 1983 the family moved to Missouri where Joan was a cook’s assistant at Camp Galilee and then worked at Hagels Shirt Factory, both in El Dorado Springs. Once again they returned to Denison in 1987. After the death of her husband on April 17, 1989, she began working at West Central Development Corp. During this time she worked at West Central Outreach Office, Beyond Dreams Head Start School, Iowa Work Force Development and Crawford County Human Services. She worked part-time at J.C. Penney Company in Denison in the 1990s until retiring in July 2003.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed visiting and having coffee with her family and friends. Activities she enjoyed included sewing, making quilts, reading and doing word-seek puzzles. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard, and his parents, Violet and Robert Moeller; two brothers, Donald and Gerald Weinbrandt; a sister-in-law, LaMae Miller, and her husband, Raymond; and a brother-in-law Robert Moeller.
Survivors include: one son, Brian Richard Moeller - El Dorado Springs; one granddaughter, Kylie Ann Moeller - El Dorado Springs; one sister, Norma Meister, and her husband, Orville - Wall Lake, IA; one brother, Roger Weinbrandt, and his wife, Lorraine - Denison; and four sisters-in-law, Maxine Weinbrandt - Denison, Charlene (Moeller) Iversen, and her husband, Howard – Vail, IA, Maxine (Moeller) Hansohn - Bettendorf, IA, and Sharon (Moeller) Bandow, and her husband, Charles - Denison; other relatives and friends.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, IA, with Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiating. Interment will be at Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig, IA, under the direction of Huebner Funeral Home, Denison, IA.
Robert Joseph Chase
Robert Joseph Chase, 73, formerly of Virgil City, passed away June 26, 2009, in the Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita, KS. He was the son of Edwin and Virginia Thomson Case, born July 18, 1935, in Monahans, TX.
He lived with his family in the Virgil City area when he attended El Dorado Springs High School. Shortly after graduation from high school, the Chase family moved to the Towanda and Potwin, KS, area.
In October 1953, he joined the United States Air Force where he served for 30 years, attaining the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. After retirement from the Air Force, he worked for the Civil Service for 10 years, retiring in 1994. He moved back to his farm near Potwin and worked on his farm every since.
On Oct. 5, 1958, he was united in marriage to Beverly Harvey. To that union two children were born, Randall J. and Lorie Ann. Beverly passed away in 2002 and Randall in 2005.
In July 2003, Bob returned to El Dorado Springs to attend the 50th reunion of his graduating class. There he renewed his friendship with his high school sweetheart, Charlotte Garrett Bonjour, and they were married Aug. 4, 2005, at his farm near Potwin, KS.
They were active in the Potwin Christian Church where Bob had attended for many years. Bob was a generous man and would help people anyway he could. The greatest love of Bob’s life was his family.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beverly; son, Randall; and step grandson, Robert Bonjour.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of the home; his daughter, Lorie Ann, and her husband, Joel Unger – Valley Center, KS; four stepchildren – Alvin and Brenda Bonjour, Pamala Glotzbach Bonjour, Dale and Michelle Bonjour – Berryton, KS, and Karl and Darcy Bonjour – Topeka; four grandchildren – Caitlan and Chase Kozak – Valley Center, KS, and Samantha and Ryan Chase – Germantown, OH; six step-grandchildren; three step great-great-grandchildren; a brother, John Chase, and his wife, Chris – Akron, OH; and his mother-in-law, Bernice Harvey – Newton, KS.
Services were held July 1, 2009, in the Potwin Christian Church with Dr. J. Tel Tittsworth officiating. The Honor Guard for the service was from 184th Intelligence Wing, Kansas Air National Guard, McConnell Air Force Base Wichita, KS. Interment was in the McGill Cemetery, Potwin, KS.
Memorials are to the Potwin Christian Church and to the Air Force Enlisted Village.

George Ruben Rosales
George Ruben Rosales, 27, Springfield, died Friday, July 24, 2009, as a result of a swimming accident. He was born Feb. 27, 1982, at Presidio Army Hospital in San Francisco, CA.
George was previously a resident of Kearney and El Dorado Springs. He was an employee of Kenney-Hall Construction Company and loved music, animals and exotic pets. He enjoyed spending his free time with his friends and family, especially his grandfather.
Preceding George in death was his maternal grandmother, Darelyn Reeves.
George is survived by his mother, Georgiana Rosales – Kearney; his grandfather, George Reeves – Tiffin; his father and stepmother, Robert and Joanne Rosales – Walker; his grandmother, Sarah Rosales – Norwalk, CA; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins of California and Oregon; two stepbrothers and their families, Jason and Erika Thomas, Draysen and Bryleigh; and Matthew and Sherry Thomas and Leandra – all of Nevada; extended family in Bolivar and Long Lane; as well as numerous close friends.
Services were held Tuesday, July 28, in Bland-Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Interment followed in the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Luke Aaron Gardner
Luke Aaron Gardner, 39, El Dorado Springs, passed away on July 27, 2009. Luke was the son of Richard and Sharon Gardner and was born March 26, 1970, in Topeka, KS.
After residing in several states as a child, Luke’s family made their home in Cedar County where Luke attended school in Stockton and El Dorado Springs.
Luke’s eldest son, Justin Wayne Short, was born Aug. 12, 1988. His second son, Chase Aaron, was born Oct. 29, 1992.
On Aug. 9, 1997, Luke was married to Crissa Joy Gerster. To this union two daughters were born, Caeleigh, 11, and Cyra Danae, 10.
After working in different areas, Luke made his occupation as a driller for the Pexco Drilling & Explosives Company, Lenexa, KS. He truly enjoyed his job.
Luke loved to hunt and fish, spend time with his family camping at Stockton Lake, and making people laugh.
Preceding him in death were his mother, Sharon Ann Gardner; his grandparents, Bob and Helen Meyer, and Joe and Ruby Gardner; aunt, Karen Whitesell; and uncle, Bill Meyer.
Luke is survived by his wife, Crissa; his daughters, Caeleigh and Cyra of the home; sons, Chase Gardner – El Dorado Springs, and Justin Short–– Texas; his dad, Richard–“Dick” Gardner”– El Dorado Springs; his mother-in-law, Pat Gerster; and many aunts, uncles, family and friends.

Clifford James (Clip) Bland
Clifford James (Clip) Bland, 84, El Dorado Springs, was born Nov. 23, 1924, the ninth child of George Anderson and Mary Roe Bland in rural St. Clair County near Blackjack. He passed away July 14, 2009.
On Sept. 13, 1953, Clip was married to Leona Messick. To this union were born two sons, James Brent and Kirk Alan.
Clip served in the U. S. Army for two years in Fort Leonard Wood, Fort Ben Harrison, IN, and Korea.
He was a dedicated Christian and his everyday life exemplified this. He had an unwavering passion for the automobile business and worked it for nearly 60 years. Before his illness, he was still as active as he could be working with his sons at the dealership.
Clip was never very outspoken about his Christianity but in his last weeks he was fervent in his desire to go “Home” and he openly shared it. He knew the assurance of living in Heaven forever was the benefit of serving God in this life.
As we remember this man and celebrate his promotion to Glory, let’s not only remember what he gave us here but what he has left us: A priceless legacy, a path to follow and a place to arrive, where all is well forever.
Preceding Clip in death were his parents, five brothers, two sisters, and his grandson, Dustin.
His survivors are his wife, Leona - of the home; two sons and wives: Brent and Jennifer - El Dorado Springs, and Kirk and Kerri - El Dorado Springs; a grandson, Tyler Bland - Kansas City; two granddaughters, Kasi and Alyson Bland - El Dorado Springs; his brother, Leo Bland, and wife, Hallie - El Dorado Springs; two sisters, Alvetta Allen – Colorado, and Ellen Eslinger - California; many nieces and nephews, and many, many friends and acquaintances.
Services were held on Friday, July 17, in the El Dorado Springs Church of God (Holiness) with Rev. Brent Bland and Rev. Kenneth Smith officiating. Jimmy and Carolyn Tucker provided music. Interment followed in the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Daniel Harvey Surprise
Retired CM/SGT Daniel Harvey Surprise, 84, El Dorado Springs, passed away July 14, 2009. He was born Nov. 20, 1924, in Ness County, KS, to Walter Lee and Ola Mae Surprise.
He served in the Air Force for 26.5 years. During World War II, he was a German prisoner of war for one year. After he retired, he and his wife bought a farm in Cedar Springs where he raised cattle and resided until his death.
Preceding Dan in death were his father, Walter L. Surprise; his mother, Ola Mae Surprise; his brother, Walter L. Surprise Jr. and a grandson, William Dysinger.
Dan is survived by Betty J. Surprise, his beloved wife of 64 years; his son, Earl Daniel Surprise; his three daughters – Polly Henderson, Linda Ross and Barbara Archambeau; eight grandchildren – Daniel Dysinger, Chad Surprise, James Bond, Robert Bond, Chris Bond, Jacob Bailey, Brandy Barnett and Jason Archambeau; 18 great-grandchildren – Brittney Francis, Brianna Dysinger, Balee Dysinger, Sydney Bond, Sam Bond, Jesse Bond, Jade Bond, Nova Bond, Jasper Bond, Zenna Bond, Tristan Bond, Ashlyn Bond, Shayla Bond, Shayla Barnett, Alexis Hall, McKayla Archambeau, Esperanza Archambeau, Aubrey Archambeau and Dustin Surprise.

Kelly Glen Gibbs
Kelly Glen Gibbs, 37, El Dorado Springs, passed away Friday, July 17, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 29, 1972, in El Dorado Springs to Glen Robert Gibbs and Susan Mary Gibbs.
Kelly was the baby of his family, being the youngest of nine children. He was very spoiled by everyone, especially his mom. He really enjoyed playing football and baseball but loved anything to do with sports. The Washington Redskins was his all-time favorite sports team. He loved watching the Skins and wrestling.
It made Kelly very happy to make people smile by cracking jokes, pulling pranks or just being silly. He was a very caring and sensitive person. His favorite thing to do was spend time with his family, especially his four daughters. They were the highlight of his life and what kept him fighting for as long as he did.

Leon 'Jack' Hardy
He attended school at Osceola and at the Pleasant Hill Country School. He was saved and later baptized at the First Baptist Church in El Dorado Springs.
In 1941 he joined the Army and was stationed in England and Germany during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
He married Margaret “Moore” Brattin on April 12, 1948, who was the love of his life. To this union twin sons were born Donnie and Ronnie. He also helped raise two step-sons, Sonny and Bob Brattin.
During his life, Jack was a farmer, iron worker, coon hunter, fisherman and a wonderful story teller. He loved music and dancing. He was also a square dance “caller.” He enjoyed many social activities including serving as president of the Osceola Saddle Club, being a VFW member and a member of the National Farmer’s Organization.
Jack was well known for his fishing. Throughout his life there were many news articles written about him. He even had his picture on a postcard promoting Osceola. At one time he was a fishing guide for Bass Pro Shops.
His grandchildren have many fond memories of Jack. He always took the time to take them swimming, fishing, horseback riding and coon hunting.
Jack spent the last year of his life living with his granddaughter, Karen, in El Dorado Springs. In June he went to stay at the Truman Lake Manor Nursing Home in Lowry City where he passed away on July 21, 2009.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Hardy; infant son, Ronnie; step-sons, Sonny, and wife, Darlene, and Bob Brattin.
He is survived by a son, Donnie Hardy – Osceola; grandchildren – Shelly Rains, and husband, Shannon – Quincy, Nikki Bray, and husband, Rick – Osceola, Karen Reed, and husband, Robert – El Dorado Springs, Brenda Rainwater, and husband, Bob – Harrisonville, Chelsea Huntington – Oklahoma, Ronnie Brattin – California, Debra Feith – Kansas City, Kenneth Brattin, and wife, Cathy – Kansas City, and Darrell Brattin – Kansas City; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.
No matter where Jack went, he never met a stranger. He had a smile and a story for everyone. Though he will be sadly missed, he left us with many wonderful memories.
Services were held Friday, July 24, in Sheldon Goodrich Chapel, Osceola, with Greg Mangum officiating. Music was Riverbank, This Old House requested by Jack and I’ll Leave This World Loving You requested by Jack.
Casketbearers were – Robert Reed, Shannon Rains, Rick Bray, J.B. Houston, Brett Rains and Ryan Bray.
Military services were by the National Guard MIKE Team.
Interment was in the Osceola Cemetery under the direction of the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Estelle Mae Haworth
Estelle Mae Haworth, 87, Nixa, died July 20, 2009. She was born Dec. 27, 1921, in Springtown, AR, the daughter of Lloyd and Luella (Hylton) Chastain.
Estelle was a graduate of El Dorado Springs High School. She then graduated from Draughons Business College in Springfield.
Estelle met Eugene Haworth while working at Nixa Cheese Plant. He was a milk hauler. They were married in 1942. Estelle later went to work at Kraft where she retired after 27 years. She and Eugene adopted two daughters, Vickie and Penni.
Estelle served 50 years as the Baptist Sunday School teacher, county PTA president until the age of 60, and treasurer of the American Legion.
Estelle was an outstanding and loving mother. She was especially known for her beautiful smile and loving touch.
Estelle was preceded in death by her parent and two brothers, Earl and Wayne Chastain.
Survivors include her husband, Eugene Glen Haworth – Nixa; two daughters, Penni Gill and Vicki Cox, and Charles Boatman – Nixa; a sister, Lacy Casey – El Dorado Springs; two grandsons, Eugene Howard Cox, and fiancee, Jessica, and Marcus Andrew Cox, and wife, Melissa; two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Mia Cox – Oklahoma.

Goldie Buerge
Goldie Buerge, 96, Nevada, formerly of Garden City, passed away Tuesday, July 14, at Culpepper Place, in Nevada.
Among local survivors is her son, Scott Buerge, and wife, Charlotte - Nevada. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, in the Sycamore Grove Mennonite Church near Garden City. Burial will be in the Clearfork Cemetery near Garden City under the direction of the Sheldon Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Friends may call after 12 p.m. Thursday at the Sheldon Funeral Home in El Dorado Springs.

Norma Day Shearburn
Norma Day Shearburn, 92, Nevada, passed away Friday, July 10, 2009, in Christian Health Care in Nevada following a brief illness. She was born Feb. 7, 1917, in Cedar County to Otto Renzie (O.R.) Bright and Daisy Alice Banker Bright. She married Merle H. Shearburn in 1939 in Nevada and he preceded her in death in 1961.
Norma graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1935. She worked at Key Work Clothes for 27 years then as a cook for Crawford House in Nevada for 10 years until her retirement. She volunteered at the Nevada Senior Center for many years.
Norma was a member of the Bronaugh Christian Church and had attended Community Christian Church in Nevada.
Norma was known as “Grandma Sugar” by all of her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and one brother.
Survivors include one daughter, Dawna Haynes – Belton; two grandchildren, DeAna Haynes – Liberty, and Devin Haynes – Belton; three great-grandchildren – Keely Haynes Dalton Haynes and Renzee Haynes – all of Belton.
Services were held Tuesday, July 14, in Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with Reverend Wes Anderson officiating. Interment was in Worsley Cemetery, Bronaugh, under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home.

James G. Painter
James “Jim” Garnett Painter, 74, died at his home in El Dorado Springs on July 8, 2009, after a long illness. He was born May 25, 1935, to Fred and Javarice Painter.
He enjoyed working in his father’s business, building and installing modular homes, his years on sea-going tug boats and in later years and cross-country trucking, until his retirement in 1993.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Javarice; and an older brother, “Freddie.”
He left behind his loving wife, Lynn; his children - Michael - Hampstead, NC, Judith Pye - McKinney, TX, Charles - Baltimore, MD, and Sean - Scottsdale, AZ.; three grandsons - Andrew, Gavin and Sean Pye and their children; step granddaughter, Valerie Todd -
Centreville, MD, and stepson, Mark Todd, who was James’ caregiver for the last four years of his life.
Jim loved life and never met a stranger. He loved the Lord, his family and his country.
Final disposition was cremation under the direction of the Sheldon Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.
Lois Darlene Smith
Lois Darlene Smith, 72, was born Aug. 6, 1936, in Cedar Creek, NE, to Lewis Henry Fletcher and Nova Waunetta (Walker) Fletcher. She passed away at her home in El Dorado Springs on July 8, 2009.
On June 30, 1956, Lois was united in marriage to Robert Edward Smith. To this union two daughters were born, Karen Sue Smith and Brenda Lou Koca.
She worked for Dunbrooke Sports Wear and Perry Manufacturing for a total of 48 years. She made many dear friends while she was working there who stayed with her throughout her years.
Darlene enjoyed sewing, needle working and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her favorite pass- time was going to Bluegrass music concerts with her best friend, Blanche Eslinger.
She was an active member of the Church of Christ in El Dorado Springs. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Preceding Darlene in death were her father, Lewis Fletcher; her mother, Nova Fletcher; her beloved husband, Robert Smith; and one brother-in-law, Leroy Smith - Pleasant Hope.
She is survived by her two daughters, Karen and Brenda - both of El Dorado Springs; two granddaughters, Trisha Sue Bayless - Roscoe, and Stephanie VanReenan - El Dorado Springs; six great-grandchildren - Jason Thomas, Chayna Penny, Sidney Bayless, Arron Simerell, Erica Simerell and Colton Eaton; two brothers, Donald Fletcher, and wife, Georgia - El Dorado Springs, and Scott Fletcher - El Dorado Springs; one sister, Janice Howerton, and husband, Richard - Nixa; two brothers-in-law, Bill Smith - Kansas City, and Ernie Smith, and wife, Caroline - Buffalo; two sisters-in-law, Jackie Moyer - Lamar, and Anna Mae Howerton, and husband, Robert - Osceola; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held Monday, July 13, in the Sheldon Funeral Home with W.L. Studer officiating. Music was provided by the Church of Christ Singers. Interment was in the Osceola Cemetery under the direction of Sheldon Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.

Zelpha Louise (Tudor) Culbertson
Zelpha Louise (Tudor) Culbertson, 84, El Dorado Springs, was born July 24, 1924, in Cedar County near Filley to Jess and Letha Tudor who were the parents of four children – J.R., Zelpha, Norman (Skip) and Darlene (Dee Dee). Zelpha passed away Monday, July 6, 2009, surrounded by loved ones at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar.
Most of Zelpha’s life was lived in Cedar County. She graduated from El Dorado Springs High School at the age of 16. She married Jesse Ray Culbertson on Dec. 25, 1941, and four children were born to this union – Judy Frances, Jessie Louise, Richard Leon and Robin Jeanette. Jesse Ray and Zelpha were blessed with 48 years of marriage before Jesse Ray’s death on Sept. 14, 1990.
Zelpha was known for her strong work ethic. She worked outside the home at International Shoe Company until it’s closing n 1981. She then worked at Junior House for several years in Nevada before retiring to care for Jesse Ray at home. Zelpha was, by nature, a loving and nurturing person. Not only did Zelpha care for her husband at home for many years, she also took care of her sister, Dee Dee, who suffered from cerebral palsy.
Her hard work didn’t end at the factory. She could be found after work tending to the garden, hanging laundry, ironing, picking berries or canning. The smell of freshly baked bread welcomed family and friends regularly. This was one of the many traditions she lovingly passed down to the next generations. She was a loving, kind-hearted, generous mother and was happiest when she was helping her kids or taking care of her children. Her quick smile and cheerful spirit will be missed by all those who knew her.
Zelpha was saved and baptized when she was a young girl and remained a faithful Christian. She attended First Christian Church in El Dorado Springs faithfully until her health declined.
Zelpha is survived by her older brother, J.R., and wife, Lee – Hallsville; her children and their spouses – Judy and W.D. Eason–– El Dorado Springs, Jessie and Steve Jacobs – Nevada, Richard and Rhonda Culbertson – El Dorado Springs, and Robin and Nick Woody – Stockton; 10 grandchildren – Darrell Eason, Donna McCormick, Curtis Eason, Steven, Stanley and Stewart Jacobs, Justin and Sara Culbertson, and Taylor and Wyatt Woody; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Barbara Minton and Rev. James Coleman officiating. Faith Trussell will provide music. Interment will follow in Wright Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.
Pallbearers will be – Darrell Eason, Curtis Eason, Steven Jacobs Jr., Stewart Jacobs, Stanley Jacobs and Justin Culbertson. Honorary pallbearers are Wyatt Woody, Donna McCormick, Taylor Woody and Sara Culbertson.

Owen Lee Davis
Owen Lee Davis entered this world in a rush on June 18, 2009, at 1:25 a.m. He was welcomed by his mommy and daddy, Whitney Benham and Tony Davis. Unfortunately, his time here was short. He went to Heaven on July 5, 2009, after visiting many family members. His passing is mourned by a host of loving family members and though he was with us only a short time, he will be missed forever.

Dale E. Haddix
Dale Elliott Haddix, 70, Schell City, was born July 15, 1938, in Schell City and passed from this life on July 4, 2009, in Schell City. He was the son of Elliott Joseph and Dorothy Mae (Davis) Haddix.
Dale graduated from Schell City High School in 1956, and then later that year joined the United States Navy where he served his first four years. By the time he was discharged, Dale attained the rank of 2nd Class Petty Officer.
In 1961, he met Dottie Ellen Pryor and they were united in marriage on Jan. 23, 1962. Dale decided to return to the Navy for what would be a total of 22 years after he was guaranteed by his recruiter that he could go to submarine school. He served aboard the USS Tidewater, Bigelow, Fulton, Robert E. Lee, Nathan Hale, Henry Clay and Simon Lake. He was also a recruiter for a time during the early 1970s. During his military tenure, Dale rose to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. He retired from the Navy in 1977.
After retirement, he and Dottie moved back to Schell City where Dale owned his own appliance business and was also a Sears Authorized area repairman. He became active in the Schell City Volunteer Fire Department and was currently serving as Assistant Fire Chief. He was elected to the Schell City City Council in 1994, serving until 2004 when he was elected mayor – a position that he was holding at the time of his death.
Dale was a quiet and thoughtful man who served his country and his hometown and will never be forgotten.
Aside from his wife, Dottie, of the home, in Schell City, Dale is survived by their three sons – Robert Dale and Kim A., Kevin Eugene and Kim J. and Thomas Elliott and Rachel; six grandchildren – Kirk, Nathan, Bryn, Hunter, Morgan and Ethan. He was always proud of his children and especially proud and fond his grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, July 10, at the Schell City Christian Church with Brother Howard McPeak officiating. Sweet By And By was the hymn of choice sung by the congregation with accompaniment by Sharron Goodman and Kelly Davis.
Pallbearers were - Kenny McCoy, Jim Goodman, Dennis Vantellman, Doug Vantellman, Tim Bailey and Bill McKinney. Honorary pallbearers were – John R. Hoagland, Cecil Prough, Ted Thomas and Sam Vantellman. Special honorary pallbearers were Dale’s grandchildren. Interment with Military Honors was held at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Schell City.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Schell City Volunteer Fire Department.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home, Schell City.
