Retired CM/SGT Daniel Harvey Surprise, 84, El Dorado Springs, passed away July 14, 2009. He was born Nov. 20, 1924, in Ness County, KS, to Walter Lee and Ola Mae Surprise.
He served in the Air Force for 26.5 years. During World War II, he was a German prisoner of war for one year. After he retired, he and his wife bought a farm in Cedar Springs where he raised cattle and resided until his death.
Preceding Dan in death were his father, Walter L. Surprise; his mother, Ola Mae Surprise; his brother, Walter L. Surprise Jr. and a grandson, William Dysinger.
Dan is survived by Betty J. Surprise, his beloved wife of 64 years; his son, Earl Daniel Surprise; his three daughters – Polly Henderson, Linda Ross and Barbara Archambeau; eight grandchildren – Daniel Dysinger, Chad Surprise, James Bond, Robert Bond, Chris Bond, Jacob Bailey, Brandy Barnett and Jason Archambeau; 18 great-grandchildren – Brittney Francis, Brianna Dysinger, Balee Dysinger, Sydney Bond, Sam Bond, Jesse Bond, Jade Bond, Nova Bond, Jasper Bond, Zenna Bond, Tristan Bond, Ashlyn Bond, Shayla Bond, Shayla Barnett, Alexis Hall, McKayla Archambeau, Esperanza Archambeau, Aubrey Archambeau and Dustin Surprise.
Dan will be loved and missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service was held Sunday, July 19, in Bland-Hackleman Chapel, El Dorado Springs, with Pastor Jim Smith officiating. Music was provided by Denis and Anelisa Woods. Interment was on Monday, July 20, in Fort Scott, KS, National Cemetery with full military honors. Arrangements were under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
Honorary pallbearers were – Chad Surprise, Danny Dysinger, Robert Bond, James Bond, Chris Bond and Brandy Barnett.
