Virdie Seitz Ewan, 89, Sun City Center, FL, passed from this life on Nov. 30, 2009, in the Stockton Nursing Home. Virdie was born Oct. 28, 1920, to Shadrack (Shade) Seitz and Letitia Neeley Seitz, the third of five children.
After graduating from El Dorado Springs High School in 1937, and then from Missouri State Teacher’s College in Springfield in 1940, she married Edward T. Ewan in May 1941. To this marriage one daughter, Betty Jo Ewan, was born in 1943.
During World War II Ed served his country in the U.S. Navy and’“Sally,” as he called her, taught school in Cedar County. After the war ended in 1945, Ed and Sally moved to Washington, DC where he continued to work with the procurement division of the Department of Navy. Sally continued to teach and went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Education Administration.
After their retirements in 1981, both Ed and Sally moved to Sun City, FL, where they were residents until their deaths.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward T. Ewan - Sun City, FL; her daughter, Betty Jo Ewan - Fairfax, VA; her siblings - brother, William H. Seitz, and sister, Betty Shade Budd - El Dorado Springs, sister, Lageta Seitz Neil - Galesburg, IL, and an infant brother, David Seitz - of El Dorado Springs.
“Aunt Virdie” as she was fondly called, is survived by one niece, four nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews and will be greatly missed by all.
A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Bland Hackleman Funeral Home in El Dorado Springs.
There will be no interment following the service, due to Mrs. Ewan’s request for cremation.
