After completing his sophomore year in high school, he began working with his brother in a garage in Nevada. At 18 he was drafted into the Army Air Corps and trained as a tail gunner. After his service, he left Missouri traveling to Idaho for two years to work in a garage again with his brother, Kenneth, where they sold Kaiser cars.

In 1952 he came back to Missouri to farm in his home community, marrying Miss Shirley Mullins in June. To this union were born two sons, Clinton and Chris. He was the happiest when his kids and grandkids were home working on one of his many ongoing farm projects, always telling everyone, “Can’t doesn’t live here.”

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, never missing a deer season and told tall tales upon returning to the house. Marv enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play sports. He loved farming and did all farming chores until the last year of his life. He had a passion for tractors old, and new, and spent many hours fixing up the old ones.

Marv was a man who was willing to help others, his motto, if he had it and you needed it; it pleased him to let you borrow it.
One of his proudest moments was when he purchased one of the first big round balers in the area. His sons and nephews were proud, too, since they were the hay haulers for the square bales. He was a regular at the local farm sales, always looking for something he didn’t have that might help him accomplish more.

Shirley struggled always, trying to get Marv to stay out of the candy jar and eat a square meal. He loved his candy; he was a candy-a-holic, if there is such a thing.

Thelma Marie (Lasley) Wosoba

Thelma Marie (Lasley) Wosoba, 66, of El Dorado Springs, was born Jan. 20, 1943, on Lively Lane in Montevallo in Vernon County, to Homer and Ida Bell Lasley. She passed away Dec. 26, 2009, at her home.

Thelma grew up loving the outdoors and all the animals in it.

She was a member of the Montevallo Baptist Church.

She married her high school sweetheart, Fred Wosoba, on Aug. 5, 1961, moving to their farm south of El Dorado Springs. To this union were born five children. The next several years were filled with love of her family, the outdoors, riding horses and her acre sized garden.

She enjoyed canning what she grew, cooking for anyone who happened to stop by and sewing—making most of our twirling and western outfits as we grew up and, of course, baking those unforgettable pies, cakes and cookies. She enjoyed several years caring for and watching her beloved grandchildren grow. She had a heart of gold and spent many years caring for family members during their times of need.

She always loved family gatherings, looking forward to each holiday with Christmas being her favorite. Later in life with her family married, she turned her love to her flower shop, “Aaron’s Place,” where she enjoyed providing flowers for a large part of El Dorado Springs. She combined these two loves on Valentine’s Day when all the family came to help at the shop. She was greatly saddened when, after 10 years, due to her failing sight, she had to close her beloved store.

After caring for others all her life, one of the hardest things she had to face was letting us care for her, as she could no longer care for herself, saying she never wanted to burden us. Mom, you were never a burden.

The last words she said were, “I love you,” but we didn’t need to hear it as she showed us each day of her life just how much she did love us. She gave us a lifetime of memories, not only her husband of 48 years and her family but everyone who knew her. She will be missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Ida Bell Lasley; parents-in-law, Henry and Susanna Wosoba; and one brother, Floyd Lasley.

Thelma is survived by her husband, Fred Wosoba; five children and their spouses – Bonnie and Jim Keith, Betty and Bill Majors, Floyd and Althea Wosoba, Aaron and Stacy Wosoba and Linda and Mike Harwood; one brother, Gene Lasley; one sister-in-law, Helen Wasoba; one brother-in-law, John Wosoba, and wife, Debbie; seven grandchildren – Amanda Nikodim, Ashley and Matt Miller, Joshua Nikodim, Daniel Wosoba, Whitney Wosoba, Cortney Weaver and Bryce Wosoba; seven step-grandchildren – Matthew, Wyatt, Makayla and James Allen Keith, April and Michael Campbell and Matthew and Melissa Harwood; two step-great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Haylee; one beloved dog, Tinkerbell; several nieces, nephews, cousins and an entire neighborhood of friends.

Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Bland-Hackleman Chapel with Bro. Everett Smith officiating. Burial followed at Virgil City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.

Helen L. Smith

Helen Louise Caywood Smith, 88, was born Aug. 24, 1921, in Benton County, near Edwards. She passed away Oct. 20, 2009, in El Dorado Springs.

Helen was the daughter of Hannibal McKinley and Eula Glenn Martin Caywood. Her early childhood was spent in Emerson, IA, until age 11 when she moved with her parents, her older brother, Herbert, and younger brother, Evan, to Cedar County, near Olympia. During high school, she sometimes stayed with Glen and Amy Braden and their children at the Olympia Store, where she worked for her living. She was very attached to the Braden’s and continued her friendship with the daughter, Bonnie, for many years.

Helen graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1940. That summer she worked at the Vernon County Jail, cooking and cleaning for the employees and the inmates. For that she earned $3 per week, plus room and board at the jail house. A part of her first earnings went into a dime bank and when it was full ($5) she opened a savings account and was never without one again. She moved to Ft. Scott, KS, and for a time worked at Key Work Clothes sewing zippers in work jeans. After saving enough money, she attended Draughn’s Business College in Springfield while working at Kress’ 5 & 10 on the square. Eventually, she went to work at Sunflower Munitions Plant in KS.

On July 4, 1943, she married George Neil Smith who had been introduced to her by her brother, Evan. Their attendants were Don and Melba McPeak. George and Helen were both working at Pratt and Lambert Paint Company when George contracted spinal meningitis and for some time after that, he wasn’t expected to live. He finally was released from the hospital on Feb. 14, 1945, and their first daughter, Donna LaNeill, was born 10 days later. In 1948 the family moved to Greenville, TX, where Helen worked at the local Junior High School. On June 2, 1951, their second daughter, Lana Kay, was born. In 1952, they moved back to El Dorado Springs where George got a job working at the State Hospital #3 in Nevada and Helen did custom sewing. She had many customers and always kept impeccable records with measurements, etc. In 1954, Terri Lynne was born and the family was complete. In 1958, she began working in the Accounting Department at the State Hospital. Her supervisor always commented that her work and her attitude were exemplary. She worked there until 1987 when she retired.

She joined the Cedar County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and for many years was the treasurer. She took her children and grandchildren to the First Baptist Church and it was when her first grandson, Lee, was born that she began working in the nursery. Long after Lee was grown, she continued to stay in the nursery, each day bringing in little crafts to help entertain the kids. She was in the nursery for 30 years.

Helen wasn’t much of a social person, preferring to sit back and listen to others. Her children never heard her raise her voice, but she was such a sweet soul that they wouldn’t have done anything deliberately to cause her distress. A harsh word was never said about Helen. She wasn’t outgoing herself, but had many friends. Helen was a thrifty person and until she was unable to tend to her affairs, kept perfect records of her important papers and her savings. She was an organizer and her home reflected that. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have reaped the benefits of her savings and generosity many times through the years.

In 1957 she and George built a home on the east side of town and Helen eventually lived there for 50 years until dementia finally made her give it up. In 2007, she moved to the Community Springs Nursing Home where she died patiently and quietly, just as she had lived.

She is survived by her three daughters - Donna, Lana and Terri; two sons-in-law, Loel Wilson and Dale Heitz; three grandchildren - Lee Wilson and Cliff and Ashley Heitz; four great-grandchildren - Lacie Smith, Adi and Asa Wilson and Parker Heitz; a brother, Herbert, and his wife, Geneal; a brother, Evan, and his wife, Carol; locally two nieces, Jaxcene Beisner and Jill Price; and other nieces and nephews.

She will be buried at a private service at the Bethel Campgrounds Cemetery in Benton County not far from where she was born. She will join George, her parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents and many other aunts, uncles and cousins. Life for her family will never be the same without this wonderful person. She was the epitome of goodness and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1500 South Glenstone, Springfield, MO 65804.
