Peter Yee-Chung Chei, 65, Freistatt, passed away at 4:18 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born on Nov. 18, 1944, in Xi’an, China, the son of Andrew Li-Chung and Pricilla Wei-Chow Chei.
Peter moved to Springfield from Hong Kong in 1964, where he attended Evangel College. Peter was referred to as a Missionary in America and dedicated his life to visiting schools and sharing in the music of the gospel. After college, he traveled to all of the states.
In 1993 he moved to Mt. Vernon where he pastored at the Free Methodist Church. He currently was the Pastor at C.H.R.I.S.T. Fellowship in El Dorado Springs, was the organist and choir director for the First Christian Church in El Dorado Springs and the Chaplin Coordinator for the Missouri Rehabilitation Center. Peter played an active role in promoting and coordinating well-known Christian artists within the Midwest. He was truly a man of God in all aspects of his life.
On Sept. 29, 2001, he married Diana L. Flynn in Mt. Vernon. She survives him of the home.
Additional survivors include his father, Andrew Chei - Brooklyn, NY; three sons - Jason Chung-Chi Chei and his wife, Sunny, and James Chei - all of Nevada, MO, and Jared Yung-Chi Chei and his wife, Lieca - Xining, China; one sister, Ruth Piscopo and her husband, Richard - North Tampa, FL; two brothers, David Chei and his wife, Nancy - Long Island, NY, and John Chei and his wife, Judy - Queens, NY; three grandchildren - Jayden, Mia and Araleigh; and the mother of his children, Janice McDonald. His mother preceded him in death.
A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 15, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, 510 E. Cherry St., Mt. Vernon. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday in the funeral home chapel.
